Patch Burning

Patchburning country is APLM's biggest task. APLM and community members go out bush to country that needs burning. Bush trips range between 1 to 10 days depending on the distances travelled. Traditionally Anangu burned the spinifex and grass country to flush out game and encourage new growth. Over time the country on the AP Lands adapted to fire and many species now require fire for their survival. Patchburning also helps to prevent uncontrolled wildfires. These wildfires can burn much hotter and longer than the small fires lit by Anangu. The hotter burn is damaging for most plants and results in large areas of bush being destroyed.

Rockhole Cleaning

Throughout the AP Lands there are many hundreds of rock holes. They range from small, temporary pools to deep holes and underground springs. Only Anangu know where all of these rockholes are located. Over time, these rockholes fill with soil. Some are filled with so much soil that they no longer hold water, so there is less water in the environment for birds and animals. Traditional Owners and APLM go out to rockholes and clean them.
