The Sanctuary Project

Walalkara Homeland is the home of Robin Kankanpakaitja and his extended family. Walalkara Homeland is south of Fregon Community and is at the base of a rock formation called Walalkara. There are three houses complete with solar power that is sufficient to run evaporative air conditioners, TV, VCR, and washing machines. A substantial fruit orchard exists and provides a variety of fruits and vegetables during the year.

The Indigenous Protected Areas (IPA) Project is an agreement between the Federal Government and Traditional Owners. It is an internationally recognised conservation area with various IUCN (Internation Union of Conservation Nature and Natural Resources) categories. It aims at using a combination of traditional and contemporary ecological knowledge. Robin has worked with AP Land Management to create the agreement and a country management plan. There's a large tract of land surrounding Walalkara Homeland that will be incorporated in this new initiative. It is hoped that this agreement between Robin and the Federal Government will provide all Anangu Pitjantjatjara people the opportunity to utilise their traditional skills and be renumerated accordingly.
