Mimili Essential Service- Power Station

The Mimili Power Station has two diesel generators which have both been provided by CAT. One is 180 KVA and the second is 181 KVA. They are both powerful enough to run the community one at a time. During the winter both are running simultaneously to provide the community with even more power. Power consumption is higher in winter as people use heaters which consume lots of energy. In summer, cooling is done by evaporative methods which consume water. Another consideration with energy consumption is the more infrastructures being developed such as new classrooms and new houses. The community power need fluctuates since the population is subject to change from people coming and going between communities. The ESO has the responsibility to maintain both the generators. Maintenance involves changing the oil once every 250 hours or about every 10 days. Once the oil is changed, a sample is taken and sent to Adelaide for analysis. The analysed oil sample can be used to tell the condition of the generator due to the condition and contents of the oil. Once every five services, or at about 1250 hours of use, all filters are changed. A generator uses approximately 600 litres of diesel every 24 hours.

Mimili airstrip

Mimili has got an airstrip 1500 metres in length with night landing facilities. The night landing lights consist of 39 lights powered by a 12v solar panel. A pilot will land if 3 are un-operational but not if 4 or more are un-operational. The ESO will check the airport once every 3 days. If a night landing is needed, the pilot will contact the clinic, the clinic will contact the ESO to check the night landing airstrip equipment and give the all clear through the clinic to the pilot.

Mimili Sewer

There are 2 ponds, with new plastic lining; the old lining was replaced in March 2004 as it was 0.5 mm too thin. It is fenced off to prevent children swimming there as this was a problem before. All sewer water is collected in the ponds but the solids are collected in the septic tanks at individual houses and cleared once every 5 years or when full.

Mimilli-Sewer pump shed

There are 2 pumps which automatically pump water to the pond, one at a time.

Mimilli Car tip

A company came to Mimili 10 years ago; they crushed, flattened and stacked car wrecks.

Mimilli Water

There are currently 2 bores at the moment, a third will be drilled soon. They are used to pump water to the storage tanks in Mimili community. There are 2 big storage tanks, a filter shed which provides water for the clinic and school then the rest is pumped into the houses. They pump water at approximately 1-2 litres a second. The ESO checks the bores once every 3 days and takes a HD report to send to Adelaide where it is analysed. The Adelaide company then know what repairs and maintenance need to be done when they visit which is once every 3 months. The water storage tank MMT 2 receives its water from bore 1 and MMT 1 receives its water from bore 2. There is also a pump shed which pumps water from the storage tanks to the water tank up high on a stand. This water is then gravity fed to the houses.
