Imanpa Store

Imanpa Homepage

The first store in Imanpa was in a 'silver bullet' which is an old silver railway carriage. That was in 1979. Then it moved into an old railway storage box / shed, such as the one that is currently a-joined to the store as a cold storage room. Some time in the eighties the current brick building was built. It was built by six members of the community.

The store is managed by one Piranpa (whitefella) lady, Lizzie, and two Anangu workers, David Wongaway and Kathy Luckey.

There are about two hundred people who live in the community who get their daily food and other goods from the store. The nearest supermarket is two hundred and eighty kilometres away in Alice Springs.

All the food in the store is delivered by truck to Mt Ebenezer Roadhouse which is seventeen kilometers away. David Wongaway drives the store truck to the roadhouse and picks up the goods which are for the store.

The store building is owned by the community, but the food inside is owned by "Lisanote" which is a private Anangu owned company, owned by Wana Ungkatja.

The opening hours of this store are 9-12 and 1-3 Mon to Friday, and 9- 12 Saturday.

The Imanpa Community store is currently being expanded to allow for a greater range of clothing and food items to be put on show. There is also a very strong emphasis on the development of healthy food items which will feature on the new storage spaces.

Kathy Luckey

My name is Kathy Luckey. I come from Henbury and Erldunda Stations. I was living at Finke for thirteen years. Then I moved back to here in 1999.

I have only been working in the store this year. I like working here. I like helping Lizzie, and putting the prices on the items and sweeping and cleaning the store. I think the food in the store is a good quality and healthy. We, as the council, are about to put in an application for a bigger store.
